9.90 had 15 racers on a 16 car field, so even though qualifying times weren’t crucial these boys held nothing back with the Top 5 running in the 9.90’s with 2 more running a bit too fast. Rob LaRocca secured the position as the CHUCK’S CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier with a 9.907 in his 1st qualifying pass.
Semi-Finals came down to Rob LaRocca in his 1970 Chevy Nova vs Tim Campbell in his 1982 Firebird, and Tom Hyatt in his 55 Chevy Belair vs Denny Moore in his 1969 Camaro. When Tim defeated Rob to go on to the finals, he took with him the HEMLY TOOL Bounty for taking down the #1 qualifier.
The finals found Tom Hyatt in an all too familiar situation, even though everyone in the RRA considers each other family, for these boys in the 9.90 final they are literally family. Tim Campbell (who is 75 years old and still kicking ass I might add) is Tom Hyatt’s father-in-law!! Tom once again proved reaction time is key when it comes to claiming a RRA victory. Cutting a .008 light on a 9.95 pass was enough to take the win even over Tim’s 9.906 pass, and give Tom the SMITTY’S CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus. Tom is the 1st racer to of the 9.90 class to have $100 coming from Mickey Thompson at the end of the season for winning the event running M/T tires.
Top 9.90 Payouts (between car count and bonus awards)
Tom Hyatt $750
Tim Campbell $340
Rob LaRocca $150

We had 12 racers willing to brave the elements for the chance to go head to head in some fierce competition; this class struggled to adjust to the 1/8th mile format during qualifying. With 2 attempts to qualify 4 of the 12 still broke out but Dennis Chillik had no problem taking home the CHUCK’S CUSTOM CART #1 Qualifying bonus putting up a 6.3004 in round #2 of qualifying.
Round #1 of Competition held a repeat of the finals from last race when Tom Hyatt once again faced and eliminated his father-in-law Tim Campbell, but Tom’s celebration didn’t last long as he was eliminated in round #2 by Denny Moore. In the Semi-Finals Chris Hyatt in his 1964 Chevy Nova took on Dennis Chillik in his 1962 Ford Torino, Chris went on to the finals and took the HEMLY TOOL Bounty on the #1 Qualifier Bonus with him. Dennis Moore in his 1969 Camaro took on Jimmy Loveland in his 1992 Chevy S10, Denny took Loveland on the tree moving on to face Chris in the finals. Denny would have to make it through both Hyatt boys in the same race to claim the victory but again Denny proved he was he was on his “A game” this race pushing Chris to break out claiming the SMITTY’S CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus with an .02 light along with his win in the finals. Denny predicted his win that morning and still remains the 1/8th mile Champion winning all 3 events the RRA has run under a modified format. Denny also has $100 coming from Mickey Thompson at the end of the season for his win on M/T tires, and Chris has $50 coming for his runner-up as well.

Qualifying proved to be tough for the 9.90 class, after 2 chances to get it done 7 of the guys still went to fast. Your CHUCK's CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier was someone many have been trying to convince to come get his feet wet with the RRA for quite some time, and in his 1st pass down the track with the RRA Tim Chillik puts up a 9.909 in his stick shift equipped 88 Mustang GT. Tim went way to fast in round #2 of eliminations giving the HEMLY TOOL Bounty up to Denny Moore. We will definitely be seeing a lot more of Tim in the future!!
One side of the ladder Semi-Finals came down to Dennis Chillik in his 68 Torino taking on Dennis Moore in his 69 Camaro. Both racers ran a 9.92 but Moore was slow on the tree (which rarely ever happens) but it was enough to give up the round win to Chillik. On the other side it was Ray Tumbry in his 68 Nova taking on another new comer to the RRA Darrin Soterra in his 68 Camaro. Darrin took advantage of racers being allowed to double enter to run with the RRA in addition to TRP's program, and not only did he make it all the way to the semi's he also took home the SMITTY's CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus in his 1st outing for his .020 light in rd # 1 of eliminations, but that's where his day came to an end when he was pushed out the back door by Ray Tumbry. Ray has fought through more mechanical gremlins than he would like to count, but finally got his day in the sun to make it through some hard fought rounds of racing. In the finals Dennis Chillik took him on the tree with an .03 light on a 9.96 pass over Ray's .08 light on a 9.91 pass to claim the victory.
We saw a big shift in the points in this class, 3 of the Top 5 went out 1st round, another 2nd...Ray Tumbry made a huge jumped tied for 7th but 9 racers back from the top spot he is now in 3rd with 3 racers above him. Dennis Chillik moved up 3 spots to bring the #1 spot back to a tie, it is now Dennis vs Dennis / Ford vs Chevy topping the Championship race!!!

It had been said by some the day would never come…The day the RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION puts on an event at SUMMIT MOTORSPORTS PARK, and with two failed attempts at getting it done to date in 2013, many began to wonder if it just wasn’t meant to be. At both of our prior outings to SMP the racers of the RRA were loaded in the lanes ready for round #1 of eliminations only to have Mother Nature rear her ugly head, stopping us in our tracks and putting an end to the events.
We Renegades are tough, keep pushing through and know how to have fun no matter what…came up with our own nicknames for the year we have had “Renegade Raining Association” / RRA = “Really Raining Again” but when I rolled through the gates on Friday afternoon and Kurt and the rest of the staff of Summit Motorsports Park referred to us as the “RAINegades”…priceless!!!
The 3rd Time’s the Charm” Right?? And after all zero percent chance of rain going into the day!! Couldn’t believe my ears when Kurt Johnson came over my radio to say “Rain is on the way, not a matter of if but a matter of when.” Had to begin to really wondered if the forces of nature really were working against us, and everyone felt the eerie sense of
deja-vu as the skies open up just as we just finished loading the lanes for round #1 of eliminations.
We stood our ground and waited the rain out, when it passed Kurt and his staff made quick work of drying the track…and then history was made on September 7, 2013 The RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATON in fact did pull of an event at SUMMIT MOTORSPORTS PARK!!!
The racers of the RRA are resilient and know by now to be ready for anything, with a delay as Rd #1 of qualifying had just begun and the radar looking grim the call was made to hold the race to one qualifier, so while suited up in their cars ready to go the guys were informed it’s now or never, with one shot to get it right, they had better bring their “A” game to the line.
2FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
Last year’s 9.90 Champ Bob Getsy is of course still racing with the RRA but wasn’t worried about defending his title he
is busy having fun becoming the 1st racer to race in all 3 Index classes within 3 years, wonder if he’s hiding an 11.50 car we don’t know about??
Must say these 9.90 boys sure never miss an opportunity to bust each other’s chops but at the same time are each other’s biggest fans and supporters. True representation of what the RRA is all about!! Not to mention the 9.90 class puts on quite a crowd pleasing wheels up display race in and race out, Tom Hyatt must have had a little wheelie envy and wanted to join in on that fun too?? Everyone at the starting line held their breath in shock on Saturday night when his 55 left hard and headed for the sky, thought for a moment he was going to carry the wheels in the air half-track.
But don’t think for a moment that just because competition in this class is fun that it isn’t fierce at the same time. 14 guys were gunning for the Chuck’s Custom Carts #1 qualifier spot but with only 1 shot 4 guys ran too fast, but Tom Hyatt nailed it with a 9.906, after a week of thrashing thru repairs he apparently came out ready to make all that hard work pay off.
The Top spot in points has been in the possession of 3 different racers up to this point and coming into this race Dennis Chillik and Dennis Moore were tied for that top spot. Round #1 of eliminations would bring that to an end as it came down to a battle of the Dennises. They held nothing back, it was a very hard fought race with the double breakout round win going to Denny Moore, officially knocking Chillik out of the top spot, but not out of contention to possibly make a comeback in the next couple races.
Dave Hinton took home the HEMLY TOOL Bounty on the #1 qualifier when Tom Hyatt red lit during round #2, and Denny Moore snagged the SMITTY’S CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus in the same round for his .010 light.
Semi-Finals came down to Chris Hyatt in his 1964 Nova taking on Ray Tumbry in his 1968 Nova. Ray took the win on the double breakout to move onto the finals. On the other side Denny Moore in his 1969 Camaro took on Dave Hinton in his 1979 Malibu. With Denny moving on to face Ray in the finals.
Denny had a great run but Ray covered him on both ends of the track to take home the win…His 1st Win with the RRA!!!! Those of you who follow the our series closely know last year was particularly tough on Tumbry, but he never gave up, never quit, just kept forging ahead and now a year later with his trip to the winners circle he was also able to break into the Top 4, making him potentially SMACKDOWN bound and definitely a Championship contender at the end of the day. As for our 2012 Bridesmaid of the year, he just proved that the saying “always a bridesmaid never a bride” No longer applies to him!!!
Denny Moore is still on top of the points championship, and has another $50 coming from MICKEY THOMPSON for runner-up on Mickey's however there are a lot of racers hungry to claim that title for themselves and they are nipping at his heels, time will tell if he has what it takes to hold them off.

September 14th - Race #8 of our 2013 Season - After almost 10 weeks away The RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION finally returned home to "Ohio's Thunder Capital" THOMPSON RACEWAY PARK. We are so blessed to have multiple tracks supporting our series, but no one can deny without Jim Curtis, the staff, and racers of Thompson Raceway Park standing behind us there would be no Renegade Racing Association. Jim saw something special, something that had potential to be great when the "founding four" brought him the idea 5 years ago. He allowed them to bring index racing to TRP the next spring. He give them a shot to pull it off and TRP quickly became the "Official Home of the RRA". That season we held 4 races with the class that started it all, the 8.90 Class. Years later, he continues to show the same support, giving us the green light to test out a new 11.50 index class during race #8 of the 2013 season. Excited to announce that next year, which will be our 5th season, we will be 5 classes strong with the addition of the 11.50 class , and with it I see great potential for the RRA to hit triple digit car counts!!
2FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
Qualifying sure meant something for the boys in the 9.90 class, with 18 cars showing up to claim the 16 open spots in the ladder, no doubt qualifying was going to be intense!! And apparently it wasn't a good day to be named Tim and race the 9.90 class. Tim Chillik, who was a previous #1 qualifier this season just couldn’t slow it down enough, and Tim Campbell who went to fast the 1st round then went to slow to make the field during the 2nd qualifying pass.
Top 2 in qualifying were separated by a mere three-thousands of a second!!! Your CHUCK's CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier was Brian Kennelly, who definitely made a statement in his 1st time running the RRA, with a 9.9059 followed closely by Tom Brown 9.9086. Chris Hyatt would be the one to take Kennelly out of competition in Rd #2 to claim the HEMLY TOOL Bounty on the #1 qualifier.
When Denny Moore (#1 in points) went down Rd #1 to the dreaded deep stage disqualification, no one could deny that any of the 4 guys just behind him could possibly take possession of the lead when it was all said and done. However, third place was going to be shaken up real quick when the guys tied for this spot were paired up in the 1st Rd of eliminations. Dennis Chillik took on Tom Hyatt, but unfortunately for Dennis, he broke out giving the round and sole possession of the 3rd place spot to Hyatt. Hyatt also had a .006 reaction time that round to get the SMITTY's CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus. When most of the guys are kicked back relaxing on a Wednesday evening, Jim Mikesina has been coming out to TRP week in and week out. He has been getting seat time while tuning his Mustang to more consistantly run the number, and it definitely paid off during race #8. I'm sure Denny Moore breathed a sigh of relief as Mikesina took down Tom Hyatt (#3 in points) in Rd #2 running a 9.91 to Tom's 9.94, then going on to take out Chris Hyatt (#4 in points) in the Semi-Finals proving he can definitely run the number putting up a 9.905 to Chris' 9.96.
The only person left posing a threat to the points leader was Ray Tumbry (#2 in points). Ray just came off his 1st RRA win just a week ago, and looked as if he may just be gearing up to do it again, but it wasn't meant to be. His night and the chance to capture the points lead ended in the semi-finals when he ran way too fast against Darrin Sotera, sending Darrin to the finals to face Mikesina. What a race this final round was!! Darrin has proven to be a tough competitor in his rookie season with the RRA. Like so many races within this series it was won on the starting line, and Mikesina's 9.95 just wasn't enough to overcome difference in reaction times to beat Sotera's 9.96.
Fourteen racers were entered in the 9.90 class for our last time out for the year, of these 14 we had 11 points participants, a spoiler, last race's #1 qualifier who couldn't wait to get back out there, and a brand new rookie who jumped into the program in the middle of qualifying. He was the 3rd newbie of the year to remind these boys they should never underestimate the competition, coming away your CHUCK'S CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier. In his only qualifier he ran an 9.9081.
Denny Moore (1st) and Ray Tumbry (1st) came into this race tied for the top spot and were also a shoe in for the ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN, Tom Hyatt (3rd) had a pretty good shot at keeping his spot in the Top 4 but it wasn't official yet, and Dennis Chillik (4th) had to hold off Chris Hyatt (5th) and Jim Loveland (6th). Realistically this classes points race was so insanely tight any of these guys could have come away the 2013 Champion at the end of the night!!
Not to sound as if I am saying anything negative about the other classes, because across the board we have the best racers this sport has to offer!!! But anyone who follows the RRA knows that 9.90 class is full of some interesting characters, and is possibly the closest group of racers in the series. They will bust each others chops HARD, but always jump to lend each other a hand in the pits even if they face each other next round. Don't get me wrong they want to take each other out of competition in the worst way, but will not only congratulate the guy who took him out but chances are will be cheering him on to take the event win!!
That being said fate dealt these guys a heavy hand during the Season Finale...
Not only were the Top 5 guys on the same side of the ladder but in 1st round of eliminations it found Moore paired up with Tumbry, and Tom Hyatt taking on Chillik. These guys just couldn't believe it, as they hung out in the lanes waiting for round #1, talking about the season and the finale itself, they were just shaking their heads, knowing that after this round the hope of securing the championship would be over for 2 of them. This prospect had 2 of them literally seeing RED!!! Denny Moore went -.0087 to end his 2013 season. He was the Runner-Up in points, after a 2nd semi-final appearance gave him the tie breaker. Tom Hyatt got taken down at the starting line as well with a -.0145 light. But Tom hung on to 4th place overall and the last vacant spot in the ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN. Tom Hyatt was the only 9.90 racer to make it into the SMACKDOWN back to back years. Don't let either of these guys going down 1st round fool you, they are as tough as they come in 9.90 and will be looking for redemption in 2014!!!
Tumbry had taken sole possession of the points lead after beating Denny 1st round but was taken off his game a bit in round #2 when Tom Brown, who foot brakes that Falcon, had the chassis of the car jump forward but front wheels never moved so the top bulb stayed lit. There was no way for Ray to overcome his delayed reaction off the line, time would tell if the title would be his to keep.
These two racers had almost identical reaction times, just .0004 separated them off the line but Chris Hyatt just couldn't quite get it done this time, his 9.95 was not enough to take out Dennis Chillik who ran a 9.91. Chris would finish up 5th overall in points.
Something plagued Tom Brown's semi-final round against Dennis Chillik and he could not run the number, which put Dennis into the finals. If he could pull off the event win it would mean that he would be crowned the class champ!! Chillik may be of retirement age but no way is he slowing down, too busy gunning for the class title in his rookie season with the RRA.
On the other side of the ladder Rob LaRocca got the advantage off the starting line and the round win when he went up against Jim Loveland. Everyone one knows that truck will run the number and if Jim can get it to react off the line...well then look out next year boys, he is long overdue and hungry for a win. Both racers would finish tied for 6th overall.
Jim Mikesina took down the #1 Qualifier in rd #2 of eliminations to take home the HEMLY TOOL Bounty Bonus, but went red in the Semi-finals sending Darrin Sotera on to face Dennis Chillik in the finals.
In the final round just .002 separated the guys out of the gate, the double break-out win went to Darrin Sotera, the only racer in the 9.90 class to win more than one race this season, a definite spoiler or in this last race maybe a blocker, just depends on who's camp you ask. Dennis Chillik took home the SMITTY'S CAR CRAFT Best Reaction Time Bonus for the night for his .0176 in the finals, and he came in 3rd place overall, after we went to the sheets to break a tie between he and Denny Moore.
After hrs of waiting around watching Dennis get closer and closer to taking the title, Ray Tumbry was able to breath a sigh of relief as he officially became the class champion!!! Ray Tumbry has had a rough couple seasons, many racers would have given up and tossed in the towel but not Tumbry, he did his best to keep his chin up and kept moving forward...right into his most successful season in 20 yrs of racing!!!
Congrats to Ray Tumbry your 2013 9.90 Class Champion!!!

2013 9.90 FINAL FOUR
TOM HYATT - '55 CHEVY / DENNIS CHILLIK '68 TORINO / DENNIS MOORE '69 CAMARO / RAY TUMBRY '68 NOVA
TOM HYATT - '55 CHEVY / DENNIS CHILLIK '68 TORINO / DENNIS MOORE '69 CAMARO / RAY TUMBRY '68 NOVA
Tom Hyatt was the only returning racer to the SMACKDOWN from 2012, for the other 3 guys this was their 1st shot at the race.

The 9.90 class has had a love/hate relationship with the tree all season long and the SMACKDOWN would prove no different. Hyatt could have just as easily gotten the round win over Tumbry but when both guys jumped the gun and went red, Ray Tumbry advanced to the finals on an -.03 to Tom Hyatt's -.35 light.

The battle of the Dennises continued into the SMACKDOWN when Dennis Chillik faced Dennis Moore in round #1. Moore was late off the line with a .11 light, Chillik put up an .02. Moore ran a hell of a pass but just couldn't overcome the difference on the top end. He ran a 9.908 to Chillik's 9.949, but the round win went to Chillik who advanced to the finals.

The final round of the 9.90 ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN paired Dennis Chillik, who is a veteran racer but a rookie to the RRA, proving age is just a number when it comes to drag racing, making the SMACKDOWN in his 1st year and was one round shy of securing the class championship title that went to Ray Tumbry just the day before. But when he went deep, he unfortunately ended his season with the dreaded deep stage disqualification, and the SMACKDOWN victory went to Ray Tumbry. Ray was the only racer to claim both titles this season!!
ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN 9.90 CHAMPION - RAY TUMBRY
