RACE #2 2013 RECAP
No one can deny that it has definitely been a turbulent spring in the weather department, and Mother Nature once again reared her ugly head in the direction of Thompson Raceway Park and the RRA for Race #2 of our 2013 season.
Beginning Friday at about 3:30 the threat of rain became a reality as the skies opened up and we were hammered with hours of torrential downpours that finally came to an end as the night fell. We stood our ground and pushed forward with the plans to race. Saturday morning we woke to 99% humidity and bitter temperatures in the 40’s, I arrived at the track to racers already waiting, multiple racers that towed hours and hours knowing our backs were against the wall to pull this off and then by 9:00 am trucks and trailers lined the street as far as the eye could see. Crazy and awesome all at the same time!!
You could literally see your breath and feel the moisture in the air, so it became a waiting game. I like to picture our boys upstairs going to bat for us and arguing to the powers that be to cut us some slack and just let us race already because we
don’t know how to throw in the towel and give up, not only that but if our fair-weather friend Ray Tumbry was willing to brave the elements and make an appearance we just had to get the race in, to honor his courage and ability to face his fears of such bitter temps at the racetrack!! Jim Curtis could have pulled the plug on the day, and no one would have blamed him, but he didn’t. If we were willing to be patient he was willing to bust his ass to get it done, and that’s exactly what he did. A very special thank you goes out to Jim Curtis and his staff for their efforts…There is definitely “No Place Like Home”
That being said, I cannot lie…the weather did impact our car counts, but for the racers who didn’t back down and didn’t let the forecast scare them off, those that came to race; they are the true definition of a what it is to be a RENEGADE!! By Definition:
RENEGADE: an individual who rejects lawful or conventional behavior
RACING: the sport or profession of engaging in or holding races
ASSOCIATION: an organization of persons having a common interest
RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION: an organization made up of men and women who reject conventional behavior to engage in events that fuel their love of drag racing!!!

CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS 10.50 INDEX
Before I get into the 10.50 highlights have to acknowledge an event that no one would ever imagined would become a reality. The TNT King himself, Dave Gebauer, aka Fast406 on the bullet, officially stepped into the competition ring making the May 11th race a historical event as his debut race with the RRA...he even surprised a few with his driving skills, will be interesting to see how things go from here now that he has gone the path of many haters before him and truly given into his dark side to join the RRA!!!
Welcome to the family Dave!!!!
As always 10.50 puts up the strongest car counts within the RRA, with 24 cars making it out for race #2. Qualifying is as intense as eliminations with these boys. More than half the racers qualified with times of 6.79 or faster. Doug Paine thought he had #1
Qualifier secure with a 6.703 pass 1st round but Dan LaRocca came out round #2 to ultimately claim the HAGGERTY MOBILE #1 Qualifier Bonus with a 6.301. Phil Nordquist qualified in the 16th position to be your TI DYNO SWEET 16 Bonus Winner.
Gary Paine took down Mike Carroll in Round #2 of eliminations by taking him on the tree and pushing him out the top end. Gary is the only racer to legitimately take down the Champ within the past 2 seasons, and we all know that is no easy task. Next round it was Father vs Son when Gary was paired up to race Doug Paine in his 1969 Buick GS – neither held anything back and what a battle!!! Gary put up a .042 light on a 6.72 pass to Doug’s .042 light on a 6.72 pass for the round win.
Dan LaRocca made it to round #3 of eliminations before Dennis Deweese was able to claim the PENN RACING Bounty on the #1 Qualifier. Semi-Finals paired Dennis Deweese in his 1963 Chevy Nova vs Mike Walker in his 1972 Chevelle, and Doug Paine against Tim Toothman in his 1985 Chevy S10. Unfortunately for Walker he was sleeping a bit on the tree, which we all know never happens, especially considering he was your MIKE BROWN CUSTOMS Reaction Time Bonus winner for his .002 light in round #2 of eliminations, so even though he ran a 6.70 it just wasn’t enough, and for Paine it was just the opposite as he went .001 red on his
pass. 3 of the 4 semi-finalists are rookies to the RRA, the veterans of the class better be looking out for this new blood…they mean business!!
In the finals Dennis Deweese showed he was gonna get the most outta his 5 hour tow in the rain just to come play in the RRA!! Just like the other index classes he pushed Tim to break out after taking him on the tree to claim the victory and to also be the 1st to double the PENN Bounty bonus by going on to win the event. Dennis also has $100 coming from Mickey Thompson at the end of the season for his win on M/T tires.
Top Payouts with Purse/Bonuses combined
Dennis Deweese - $600
Tim Toothman / Mike Walker / Dan LaRocca - $150 each
MICKEY THOMPSON OUTLAW LIMITED STREET
What can be said about Outlaw Limited Street…we all know this race was particularly hard on this class.
We still had 3 guys come and tough it out…one guys whose presence was missed by all who know and love him during the 2012 season. Ray Litz was back in action with the RRA, this time stepping up to stir up trouble within the Outlaw class. Can’t wait to see what that Camaro is truly capable of when he returns to TRP on June 22nd.
Keith Sletvold went red in round #1 against George Rumore who claimed the SKIPPY DID IT RACECARS Reaction Time Bonus in the same round for his .07 light. But Keith still advanced to face Ray Litz after George put us all on the edge of our seats with his wild ride across both sides of the track. George also fought mechanical gremlins all day and it was great to see all the RRA racers who stepped up to help out.
Ray seemed to trade places with George from Race #1 to take home all the $$ at the end of the day. He was your M & M CHASSIS CRAFT #1 Qualifier for his 5.30 pass in round #2 of qualifying. He went on to win the event taking with him the PERFORMANCE APPLIANCE Bounty as well as the QUARTER MILE FINISH Winners Bonus.
Top Payouts with Purse/Bonuses combined
Ray Litz - $775
Keith Sletvold - $200
George Rumore - $120
