Our 1st attempt at running the RPM/LUCAS OIL EXTREME EVENT presented by Mickey Thompson Tires rained out, and as we have done in the past we gave the guys the option to keep their money in the pot and carry it over for a winner takes all bonus payout!! This and a very tight points race made for some intense racing action to say the least!
JIM MIKESINA SECURITY 8.90 INDEX
In the 8.90 Index all 7 guys entered were eligible for the bonus. Unfortunately for Clay Courson he suffered some mechanical issues prior to the event and was not able to come out and race. Bill Benson put his car into the wall at over 150 mph just a week before, I can only imagine the late night thrashing but somehow they were back out with the Nova!! Unfortunately for Bill some issues cropped up during 1st round of qualifying, but never say die right?? Bill came up during rd #2 with a back up car that just couldn't compete and he was a sitting duck come rd #1 of eliminations.
Things just went all wrong for Troy Wotring in round #1 when something caught his eye and he let go of the button before the tree had cycled giving the win away to Ray Galvin. Ray moved on to take Al by .01 off the line then ran dead on with a 4 to secure his spot in the finals.
On the other side of the ladder Mike Pleveich went red against Chico sending him on to meet Ray...Ray came out on the good side of a double breakout final round to take his 1st ever event win in the 8.90 class and the $1150 to go with it.
2 FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
9.90 had 16 cars entered the 1st time around and 17 entered at this event, bringing their guaranteed payout to a grand total of $2000. Not every racer was eligible but those who were intended to fight to take it home. Brian Kennelley (your points leader) found himself outside the ladder in the pigtail round to start the event off. By the time we made it to the semi-finals 2 points racers where left standing Ray Tumbry (last years 9.90 Champ) and JR Phillips they were set to face some tough competition in last years 8.90 Champ Jimmy Getsy and a newcomer to the RRA Vito Gambino.
JR's pass was good but not good enough .06/6.305 but Vito took him by .05 off the line and his 6.31 pass was all he needed to make it into the final round. Jimmy Getsy had Ray covered from start to finish during their match-up but would give the event win to Vito when he broke out with a 6.25 in the finals. Vito Gambino came out swinging and proceeded to walk away from his 1st Renegade event with a victory and 2000 reasons to smile!!
CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS 10.50 INDEX
The 10.50 class was my inspiration for the class independent payouts for this special event. They also secured themselves a $2000 payout between both events. This class has had the strongest car counts of the series since joining the program in 2011. Thanks to RPM's support it was great to finally see them rewarded they way the always wanted!!
Qualifying was intense and the racing was off the hook!!! When a racer puts up a .017 package that is no doubt getting it done, or you would think. But sadly for Geno Adkins when he is .008 off the line on a 6.709 pass in the opposite lane was literally history in the making. For the 1st time in RRA history a racer put up a perfect pass!!! Gary Wojnowski .000 / 6.700, that snagged him a spot in the finals and 16 bonus points!!
Dennis DeWeese and Mike Carroll were set to go head to head in the semi-finals...just one point separating them in the Championship Race this round was huge!! Dennis give it to Carroll when he went .005 red and Carroll got a little breathing room as 20 points now separates these two racers.
The final round that almost wasn't!! Mike Carroll was suddenly plagued with a starter problem in the lanes but in great RRA fashion everyone around pitched in to help and with a slight delay to the program we got them to the line. It was Carroll's turn to go red (-.03) and Wojnowski topped his spectacular night off with a win and a $2000 take home prize!!
JIM CLERE MEMORIAL 11.50 INDEX
The 11.50 class was a mix of eligible racers and newcomers in this event. Top 2 in Points would face off in 2nd round and Mark Franko would cushion his lead just a bit when he knocked Phil Nordquist out of competition. That's as far as Mark would go, in the very next round he would be the worse offender of a double breakout sending Jim Slaughter into the finals.
Renee Blair was one round shy of her 1st final of the season but when she went red it would send newbie, James Davies on to his 1st final in his very 1st outing with the RRA.
The RRA prides itself in being family, bonded not by blood but our mutual love of racing. Every now and again it happens that it covered on both ends! It was awesome to learn that the 11.50 final paired up Grandfather (Jim Slaughter) and Grandson (James "Jimbob" Davies) The excitement and pride in Jim's voice when he came over to me just before they ran to let me know was a beautiful reminder of exactly why I love what I do and love what the RRA truly stands for. Behind the occasional bickering and drama that makes for great gossip is a love of a great sport an outlet for a passion that drives us all and the reward of bonding families, blood or otherwise is more satisfying than any paycheck punching a time clock could ever bring. It was be the younger generations time to shine and James Davies would be the 11.50 winner claiming the $1350 top prize.
The Race in a Nutshell...
We all woke up Saturday morning to Mother Nature again wreaking havoc on our plans. Extreme bitter temps, a wicked wind that just cut to the bone and of course RAIN!! Jim Curtis of Thompson Raceway Park has had our backs from day one and he knew how important this event was to the racers of the RRA. When most assumed the day was doomed to fail…he watched, he waited and then he made the call to open the gates and let us run!! In the end…the day belonged to the racers of the RRA!! 2 hrs behind schedule and limited to an 1/8th mile program we still put on a hell of a
show!!
The odds were definitely stacked against us yet we pulled together to put on what may be the most intense rounds of eliminations of any event to date! I couldn’t quite make it to the starting line for the finals so I made my way to the fence where I saw many RRA racers were already there waiting for the final round to begin and as I directed my attention to the action in the lanes I was amazed at what I saw…It was packed, almost every one of my racers who lost throughout the night didn’t pack up and head for home like they have for most of this past season long. There they were, standing on the starting line and along the fence cheering their fellow racers. The excitement in the air was palpable, and I was overwhelmed with a sense of pride, I have not seen anything like it in a long while!! I know Tommy and Chris had to be smiling down on all of us at what we have
accomplished.
After all these years together you can tend to begin to go through the motions even if you still love what you do but I believe the faith that Chris and Trish of RPM Magazine have put in our program has renewed a fire inside of all of us. They saw something special within the RRA and at the Extreme Event brought to us by RPM/Lucas Oil and Mickey Thompson we no doubt showed exactly what it is they see in us. On behalf of the RRA I want to say thank you! We are truly grateful for everything you have done for us and we excitedly look forward to an EXTREME Future with RPM Magazine by our side.
