RECAP RACE #7 2013
It had been said by some the day would never come…The day the RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION puts on an event at SUMMIT MOTORSPORTS PARK, and with two failed attempts at getting it done to date in 2013, many began to wonder if it just wasn’t meant to be. At both of our prior outings to SMP the racers of the RRA were loaded in the lanes ready for round #1 of eliminations only to have Mother Nature rear her ugly head, stopping us in our tracks and putting an end to the events.
We Renegades are tough, keep pushing through and know how to have fun no matter what…came up with our own nicknames for the year we have had “Renegade Raining Association” / RRA = “Really Raining Again” but when I rolled through the gates on Friday afternoon and Kurt and the rest of the staff of Summit Motorsports Park referred to us as the “RAINegades”…priceless!!!
The 3rd Time’s the Charm” Right?? And after all zero percent chance of rain going into the day!! Couldn’t believe my ears when Kurt Johnson came over my radio to say “Rain is on the way, not a matter of if but a matter of when.” Had to begin to really wondered if the forces of nature really were working against us, and everyone felt the eerie sense of
deja-vu as the skies open up just as we just finished loading the lanes for round #1 of eliminations.
We stood our ground and waited the rain out, when it passed Kurt and his staff made quick work of drying the track…and then history was made on September 7, 2013 The RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATON in fact did pull of an event at SUMMIT MOTORSPORTS PARK!!!
The racers of the RRA are resilient and know by now to be ready for anything, with a delay as Rd #1 of qualifying had just begun and the radar looking grim the call was made to hold the race to one qualifier, so while suited up in their cars ready to go the guys were informed it’s now or never, with one shot to get it right, they had better bring their “A” game to the line.
2FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
Last year’s 9.90 Champ Bob Getsy is of course still racing with the RRA but wasn’t worried about defending his title he
is busy having fun becoming the 1st racer to race in all 3 Index classes within 3 years, wonder if he’s hiding an 11.50 car we don’t know about??
Must say these 9.90 boys sure never miss an opportunity to bust each other’s chops but at the same time are each other’s biggest fans and supporters. True representation of what the RRA is all about!! Not to mention the 9.90 class puts on quite a crowd pleasing wheels up display race in and race out, Tom Hyatt must have had a little wheelie envy and wanted to join in on that fun too?? Everyone at the starting line held their breath in shock on Saturday night when his 55 left hard and headed for the sky, thought for a moment he was going to carry the wheels in the air half-track.
But don’t think for a moment that just because competition in this class is fun that it isn’t fierce at the same time. 14 guys were gunning for the Chuck’s Custom Carts #1 qualifier spot but with only 1 shot 4 guys ran too fast, but Tom Hyatt nailed it with a 9.906, after a week of thrashing thru repairs he apparently came out ready to make all that hard work pay off.
The Top spot in points has been in the possession of 3 different racers up to this point and coming into this race Dennis Chillik and Dennis Moore were tied for that top spot. Round #1 of eliminations would bring that to an end as it came down to a battle of the Dennises. They held nothing back, it was a very hard fought race with the double breakout round win going to Denny Moore, officially knocking Chillik out of the top spot, but not out of contention to possibly make a comeback in the next couple races.
Dave Hinton took home the HEMLY TOOL Bounty on the #1 qualifier when Tom Hyatt red lit during round #2, and Denny Moore snagged the SMITTY’S CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus in the same round for his .010 light.
Semi-Finals came down to Chris Hyatt in his 1964 Nova taking on Ray Tumbry in his 1968 Nova. Ray took the win on the double breakout to move onto the finals. On the other side Denny Moore in his 1969 Camaro took on Dave Hinton in his 1979 Malibu. With Denny moving on to face Ray in the finals.
Denny had a great run but Ray covered him on both ends of the track to take home the win…His 1st Win with the RRA!!!! Those of you who follow the our series closely know last year was particularly tough on Tumbry, but he never gave up, never quit, just kept forging ahead and now a year later with his trip to the winners circle he was also able to break into the Top 4, making him potentially SMACKDOWN bound and definitely a Championship contender at the end of the day. As for our 2012 Bridesmaid of the year, he just proved that the saying “always a bridesmaid never a bride” No longer applies to him!!!
Denny Moore is still on top of the points championship, and has another $50 coming from MICKEY THOMPSON for runner-up on Mickey's however there are a lot of racers hungry to claim that title for themselves and they are nipping at his heels, time will tell if he has what it takes to hold them off.
Top Payouts in 9.90
Ray Tumbry $600
Denny Moore $400
CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS 10.50 INDEX
Last years Champ, Mike Carroll came out to start 2013 with a win, to take a quick lead but anyone that has raced multiple classes will tell you 10.50 just may be the toughest class to go rounds. By race #2 Dennis Deweese was sitting
right alongside Mike in the top spot, and has stayed just one step behind ever since, proving that in his 1st season with the RRA he definitely came to play. Mike Walker met him on top after race #4, then began to pull ahead. As the Battle of the Mike’s is probably one of the biggest rivalries in the series. As it plays out, it has been compared to a football game, even have “blockers” coming out to take part. Not to mention, we have a well-known “TnT King” backing up all his pre-season banter by coming out and wreaking havoc on these boys all season long. Definitely exciting, can’t miss a moment of it action in this class…
The “Filler Class” was more than full at this outing for the RRA. With 35 guys battling it out for the 32 vacant spots on the ladder, being held to one qualifier made it rough for these guys, but we all know our biggest competitor all season has been Mother Nature. Was great to see all the new blood in the lanes, many who proved to be stiff competition for our veterans in the class. Dennis Deweese was your HAGGERTY-MOBILE #1 Qualifier with a 10.529. Miles Reese qualified 16th to take home the TI DYNO SWEET 16 Bonus of $50 and one hr of FREE Dyno Time.
Lisa Chess was going to come out to make her mark in the history books for the RRA as the 1st women to race in an index class, but went down to mechanical failure and had to drop out of the event, hopefully she will make it back out before the season comes to a close.
Bob Brown quickly claimed the HYATT RACING Bounty bonus taking down the #1 qualifier with a 10.502 pass in his 1989 Mustang. Then went on to claim the MIKE BROWN CUSTOMS Reaction Time Bonus for his .002 in rd #2.
Semi-Finals came down to veterans vs. rookies. Mike Walker in his 1972 Chevelle took on Gary Wojnowski, who is in his rookie season with the RRA, and on the other side Gene Adamic in his 1975 Plymouth Duster took on Brian Baehr, this was Brian’s very first event with the RRA. With the veterans falling to the rookies in the semi’s, Brian Baehr continued on to make his mark on the RRA defeating Gary Wojnowski. Brian also has $100 coming from MICKEY THOMPSON TIRE at the end of the season for his win running M/T tires.
Top Payouts in 10.50
Brian Baehr $600
Gary Wojnowski $300
MICKEY THOMPSON OUTLAW LIMITED STREET
These heads up cars can behave more like hounds from hell, with wicked HP and edge of your seat passes down the track to prove it. Ray Royer, in his very 1st event as a racer within the RRA, was your M & M CHASSIS CRAFT #1 Qualifier with a 4.77 in rd #1. Still putting up that kind of number on a pass hindered by mechanical gremlins which forced Royer to bow out of the event. Ray officially joined the ranks of the many sponsors (Quarter-Mile Finish) that also participate in the RRA as racers.
Mark Smith got to claim the PERFORMANCE APPLIANCE Bounty’s on the #1 Qualifier when Royer was unable to continue, giving him a competition single. He was also your SKIPPY DID IT RACECARS Reaction Time Bonus Winner for his .04 light in Rd #1 of eliminations.
George Rumore met Dave Hinzman in the semi-finals, but George also fell victim to mechanical failures costing him the round, and allowing Dave to get back on top of the chase for the championship. We will have to see how this plays out…will Rumore make it back in time to challenge Hinzman for the title?
Finals were Dave Hinzman, and newcomer to the outlaw class Mark Smith in his 1996 Camaro, this was Mark’s 2nd time out with us this season. Dave came out with the win, and the QUARTER MILE FINISH Winner’s Bonus but more than that he set a new record for the class!!! The starting line went wild when Hinzman put up a 4.636 during the final round of competition.
Hinzman and Smith was eligible for the double payout from July 27th.
Dave Hinzman $1450
Mark Smith $460
