RECAP RACE #8 2013
September 14th - Race #8 of our 2013 Season - After almost 10 weeks away The RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION finally returned home to "Ohio's Thunder Capital" THOMPSON RACEWAY PARK. We are so blessed to have multiple tracks supporting our series, but no one can deny without Jim Curtis, the staff, and racers of Thompson Raceway Park standing behind us there would be no Renegade Racing Association. Jim saw something special, something that had potential to be great when the "founding four" brought him the idea 5 years ago. He allowed them to bring index racing to TRP the next spring. He give them a shot to pull it off and TRP quickly became the "Official Home of the RRA". That season we held 4 races with the class that started it all, the 8.90 Class. Years later, he continues to show the same support, giving us the green light to test out a new 11.50 index class during race #8 of the 2013 season. Excited to announce that next year, which will be our 5th season, we will be 5 classes strong with the addition of the 11.50 class , and with it I see great potential for the RRA to hit triple digit car counts!!
2FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
Qualifying sure meant something for the boys in the 9.90 class, with 18 cars showing up to claim the 16 open spots in the ladder, no doubt qualifying was going to be intense!! And apparently it wasn't a good day to be named Tim and race the 9.90 class. Tim Chillik, who was a previous #1 qualifier this season just couldn’t slow it down enough, and Tim Campbell who went to fast the 1st round then went to slow to make the field during the 2nd qualifying pass.
Top 2 in qualifying were separated by a mere three-thousands of a second!!! Your CHUCK's CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier was Brian Kennelly, who definitely made a statement in his 1st time running the RRA, with a 9.9059 followed closely by Tom Brown 9.9086. Chris Hyatt would be the one to take Kennelly out of competition in Rd #2 to claim the HEMLY TOOL Bounty on the #1 qualifier.
When Denny Moore (#1 in points) went down Rd #1 to the dreaded deep stage disqualification, no one could deny that any of the 4 guys just behind him could possibly take possession of the lead when it was all said and done. However, third place was going to be shaken up real quick when the guys tied for this spot were paired up in the 1st Rd of eliminations. Dennis Chillik took on Tom Hyatt, but unfortunately for Dennis, he broke out giving the round and sole possession of the 3rd place spot to Hyatt. Hyatt also had a .006 reaction time that round to get the SMITTY's CAR CRAFT Reaction Time Bonus. When most of the guys are kicked back relaxing on a Wednesday evening, Jim Mikesina has been coming out to TRP week in and week out. He has been getting seat time while tuning his Mustang to more consistantly run the number, and it definitely paid off during race #8. I'm sure Denny Moore breathed a sigh of relief as Mikesina took down Tom Hyatt (#3 in points) in Rd #2 running a 9.91 to Tom's 9.94, then going on to take out Chris Hyatt (#4 in points) in the Semi-Finals proving he can definitely run the number putting up a 9.905 to Chris' 9.96.
The only person left posing a threat to the points leader was Ray Tumbry (#2 in points). Ray just came off his 1st RRA win just a week ago, and looked as if he may just be gearing up to do it again, but it wasn't meant to be. His night and the chance to capture the points lead ended in the semi-finals when he ran way too fast against Darrin Sotera, sending Darrin to the finals to face Mikesina. What a race this final round was!! Darrin has proven to be a tough competitor in his rookie season with the RRA. Like so many races within this series it was won on the starting line, and Mikesina's 9.95 just wasn't enough to overcome difference in reaction times to beat Sotera's 9.96.
CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS 10.50 INDEX
The 10.50 class was 27 cars strong for race #8, not quite a full field but these guys mean business, just lucky for them they had 2 rounds to get it right because Rd #1 of qualifying 12 racers must have thought we bumped the index to 10.40 because they were all too fast. Rd #2 they got their act together for the tightest qualifying of any of the index classes. The entire top half of the field all qualified with times of 10.59 or better!! Your HAGGERTY-MOBILE #1 Qualifier only needed Rd #1 to get it right, Phil Nordquist's 10.5042 held out even when everyone stepped it up in Rd #2 of qualifying. The next 3 positions all came in with passes of 10.51, followed up by 5 guys putting up 10.52s and another 3 with 10.53s...top 12 were impressive!!! TI DYNO's SWEET 16 Qualifier was John Carroll.
The 10.50 Points Championship has stayed tight all season long as this class is loaded with very competitive racers that are not in the chase. Going into this race there was still a good chance the championship could go to any of the top 3 but when Rd #1 of eliminations found Mike Carroll (#2 in points) falling to Dan Marvin, and Dennis Deweese (#3 in points) also going down to Paul Carillon their hopes of the Championship quickly faded. Mike Walker (#1 in points) took home the HYATT RACING Bounty on the #1 qualifier when Phil broke out during Rd #3 of eliminations. Greg Zilke made it all the way to the semi-finals to face Walker, and even though Walker took the double break-out round win, Greg made a big jump in the points moving up enough to potentially be a contender to break into the SMACKDOWN at the finale.
Gary Wojnowski, has really shown he is a force to be reckoned with in his 1st season with the RRA, and for those of you familiar with the Battle of the Mike's, he has been one of Carroll's go to blockers. Gary took home the MIKE BROWN CUSTOMS Reaction Time Bonus for his .006 light in Rd #3 of eliminations, but unfortunately he went -.00 red in the finals giving the win to Walker. Walker not only got his 1st win in the 2013 season but with it locked up the 2013 Championship with a race to spare!! Congratulations to Mike Walker (your unofficial champion till we get past the finale). It will be interesting to see if the celebration is cut short by Carroll getting to come back and steal a bit of that glory in the ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN...or will the SMACKDOWN CHAMPIONSHIP go to one of the other 2 guys meeting them in the 2 round winner take all event?? Can't wait to see how it all plays out...
Lisa Chess did in fact make it back to the track, qualifying in the top half of the ladder in the 14th position, and officially became the 1st women to compete in eliminations within the index classes of the RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION...looks like she will be the 1st of many!!
RENEGADE 11.50 INDEX
The new class was given the green light for 2014 after 13 cars showed with just 3 weeks notice, among them was the 2nd women to join the RRA...Renee Blair. Move over boys...looks like the girls are coming to play too!!!
With half the class running too fast your #1 Qualifier was Mike Formick with an 11.51, and the winner of the 1st ever 11.50 Index race was Kevin Hamner, who got it done in his street legal Vega.
I am very excited to see what 2014 holds for this new class. Will no doubt be a great addition to the RRA!!!
MICKEY THOMPSON OUTLAW LIMITED STREET
We had 4 guys come out to compete in the outlaw class for Race #8. Unfortunately for George Rumore he was not able to get the motor repaired in time to compete in this event. All 4 racers were consistently putting down 5 second range in both qualifying and eliminations. Dave Hinzman was your M & M CHASSIS CRAFT #1 Qualifier with a 5.07.
Dave came out with the win at that end of the night running a 5.14 with a .04 light for the SKIPPY DID IT RACE CARS Best Reaction Time Bonus to Ed McGuinn's 5.19 in the finals. The win allowed him to keep the PERFORMANCE APPLIANCE Bounty for himself, not to mention the QUARTER MILE FINISH Winner's Bonus.
I have a feeling the boys from New York may give him a good run for his money next race. This was Ed McGuinn's 1st time back out to the track since getting the Trans-Am back together. With the win, pretty sure Hinzman has all but sealed the deal on becoming the 1st Stainless Works Points Champion for the Outlaw Limited Street Class.
September 28th is the special event for the Outlaw Class: THE ROSSLER NATIONALS - $2000 to Win!!!!!
