RECAP RACE #9 2013
2FAST GARAGE 9.90 INDEX
Fourteen racers were entered in the 9.90 class for our last time out for the year, of these 14 we had 11 points participants, a spoiler, last race's #1 qualifier who couldn't wait to get back out there, and a brand new rookie who jumped into the program in the middle of qualifying. He was the 3rd newbie of the year to remind these boys they should never underestimate the competition, coming away your CHUCK'S CUSTOM CARTS #1 Qualifier. In his only qualifier he ran an 9.9081.
Denny Moore (1st) and Ray Tumbry (1st) came into this race tied for the top spot and were also a shoe in for the ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN, Tom Hyatt (3rd) had a pretty good shot at keeping his spot in the Top 4 but it wasn't official yet, and Dennis Chillik (4th) had to hold off Chris Hyatt (5th) and Jim Loveland (6th). Realistically this classes points race was so insanely tight any of these guys could have come away the 2013 Champion at the end of the night!!
Not to sound as if I am saying anything negative about the other classes, because across the board we have the best racers this sport has to offer!!! But anyone who follows the RRA knows that 9.90 class is full of some interesting characters, and is possibly the closest group of racers in the series. They will bust each others chops HARD, but always jump to lend each other a hand in the pits even if they face each other next round. Don't get me wrong they want to take each other out of competition in the worst way, but will not only congratulate the guy who took him out but chances are will be cheering him on to take the event win!!
That being said fate dealt these guys a heavy hand during the Season Finale...
Not only were the Top 5 guys on the same side of the ladder but in 1st round of eliminations it found Moore paired up with Tumbry, and Tom Hyatt taking on Chillik. These guys just couldn't believe it, as they hung out in the lanes waiting for round #1, talking about the season and the finale itself, they were just shaking their heads, knowing that after this round the hope of securing the championship would be over for 2 of them. This prospect had 2 of them literally seeing RED!!! Denny Moore went -.0087 to end his 2013 season. He was the Runner-Up in points, after a 2nd semi-final appearance gave him the tie breaker. Tom Hyatt got taken down at the starting line as well with a -.0145 light. But Tom hung on to 4th place overall and the last vacant spot in the ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN. Tom Hyatt was the only 9.90 racer to make it into the SMACKDOWN back to back years. Don't let either of these guys going down 1st round fool you, they are as tough as they come in 9.90 and will be looking for redemption in 2014!!!
Tumbry had taken sole possession of the points lead after beating Denny 1st round but was taken off his game a bit in round #2 when Tom Brown, who foot brakes that Falcon, had the chassis of the car jump forward but front wheels never moved so the top bulb stayed lit. There was no way for Ray to overcome his delayed reaction off the line, time would tell if the title would be his to keep.
These two racers had almost identical reaction times, just .0004 separated them off the line but Chris Hyatt just couldn't quite get it done this time, his 9.95 was not enough to take out Dennis Chillik who ran a 9.91. Chris would finish up 5th overall in points.
Something plagued Tom Brown's semi-final round against Dennis Chillik and he could not run the number, which put Dennis into the finals. If he could pull off the event win it would mean that he would be crowned the class champ!! Chillik may be of retirement age but no way is he slowing down, too busy gunning for the class title in his rookie season with the RRA.
On the other side of the ladder Rob LaRocca got the advantage off the starting line and the round win when he went up against Jim Loveland. Everyone one knows that truck will run the number and if Jim can get it to react off the line...well then look out next year boys, he is long overdue and hungry for a win. Both racers would finish tied for 6th overall.
Jim Mikesina took down the #1 Qualifier in rd #2 of eliminations to take home the HEMLY TOOL Bounty Bonus, but went red in the Semi-finals sending Darrin Sotera on to face Dennis Chillik in the finals.
In the final round just .002 separated the guys out of the gate, the double break-out win went to Darrin Sotera, the only racer in the 9.90 class to win more than one race this season, a definite spoiler or in this last race maybe a blocker, just depends on who's camp you ask. Dennis Chillik took home the SMITTY'S CAR CRAFT Best Reaction Time Bonus for the night for his .0176 in the finals, and he came in 3rd place overall, after we went to the sheets to break a tie between he and Denny Moore.
After hrs of waiting around watching Dennis get closer and closer to taking the title, Ray Tumbry was able to breath a sigh of relief as he officially became the class champion!!! Ray Tumbry has had a rough couple seasons, many racers would have given up and tossed in the towel but not Tumbry, he did his best to keep his chin up and kept moving forward...right into his most successful season in 20 yrs of racing!!!
Congrats to Ray Tumbry your 2013 9.90 Class Champion!!!

CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS 10.50 INDEX
With 26 entries, our "Filler Class" was lacking a few racers to be considered full, it was by no means lacking in competition. With his win at the last event, Mike Walker had already sealed the deal on the 2013 Championship as well as the SMACKDOWN. There were still 10 guys in this class battling it out for those 3 remaining spots up top. Last years Champ, Mike Carroll (2nd), Dennis Deweese (3rd) and John Sahli (4th) had to hold off the handful of very skilled racers breathing down their necks to hang on to the remaining spots. Bob Singer and Gene Adamic were tied for 5th, Bob Getsy and Mike Blair were tied for 6th, Dan Marvin and Greg Zilke were tied for 7th, and last but not least Gary Paine (8th) had a long shot at making it in but it wasn't out of reach. First thing he needed to do was Qualify #1...For Gary, like so many of our more "seasoned" racers, he reminds us age is just a number when he shows these younger boys how to get it done. Your HAGGERTY-MOBILE #1 Qualifier was in fact Gary Paine with a 10.5035 pass in round #2 of qualifying.
John Carroll qualified 16th and came away with the TI DYNO Sweet 16 Bonus. Bill Bowman put up a .0030 light to get your MIKE BROWN CUSTOMS Reaction Time Bonus for the night, beating Wojnowski's best light by .0002.
Dan Marvin runs points with both us and OSCA, unfortunately for him there were a couple of schedule conflicts this season and when he had to bow out of our program he dropped back to 13th overall.
Greg Zilke fell to John Carroll 1st round, leaving him out of the top 4 and making room for a few guys to move ahead of him and Greg finished 11th overall.
Gary Paine's plans for a "4th quarter hail mary pass" into the Top 4 came up short when he found himself up against one of the blockers of the 10.50 class. Gary Wojnowski got him on the tree and Paine just couldn't make it up on the top end. Wojnowski claimed the HYATT RACING Bounty on the #1 with that round win. When it was all said and done at the end of the night, Paine finished the season up 11th overall.
Gene Adamic's hopes of making the SMACKDOWN went up in smoke when he had to withdrawal from the program after the just one qualifying pass. Bob Singer went down during 1st round of eliminations bringing his season to a close. Bob and Gene finished out the year tied for 7th overall.
Mike Blair didn't make it far enough during the finale to crack the top 4 when he broke out against Tim Chumley in round #3 of eliminations. Mike is a great example of the kind of racers I am so very proud to have running the RRA. If you ask my opinion Mike pretty much got a bum deal during race #7 and hard to say how it could have played out for him this year overall if things had gone differently that day, but of all the drama-filled things we heard from that race, many of you may not even know what happened to him. Great guy, good sportsman...hope to see more of him in the lanes come 2014. Mike finished the year 6th overall.
Bob Getsy had to run 4 rounds just to get to round #3. Your 2012 9.90 Champ still continues to show us what the RRA is all about - Bob is class act, and will be the 1st to tell you it is tough to go rounds in 10.50!! But when there was an issue on his opponents side of the starting line during round #1, even though he got the round win he still agreed to re-run it. He probably wishes he could run rd #3 again when he was caught sleeping a bit on the tree, then broke out at the top end trying to make it up. Bob finished out the year in 5th place.
In their very 1st season with the RRA, these two rookies proved to be very tough competition for the veterans of this class as they rounded out the top 4 within the 10.50 class. Surprisingly it even went down to a tie-breaker to see which of them would officially claim 3rd place. John Sahli consistently took his 69 Camaro further in eliminations, but Dennis Deweese secured the tie-breaker with his event win with his 63 Nova during race #2. At the finale, both went down in possibly some of the tightest races of the night. Dennis faced the 2013 champ in round #1, his .02 light cost him the round when his 10.5124 wasn't enough to overcome Walker's .01 light on a 10.5201 pass. John Sahli and Mike Blair were separated by just .0007 off the line, John lost the round when he was the worst offender in the double breakout running a 10.46 to Mike's 10.47. 3rd place overall went to Dennis Deweese, and John Sahli came in 4th hanging onto the last remaining spot within the ABUZZI SMACKDOWN for 10.50.
We all know, watching the Battle of the Mike's play out, how sweet his round #3 win at the finale had to feel for Carroll. Walker got it done and officially took his title just one race ago but going head to head in eliminations now Carroll once again got the win. These two haven't been paired up since the finals of race #1 this season, a round Carroll won as well. Carroll unfortunately went red in the semi-finals. He finished as Runner-Up for the season.
The finals came down to our class blocker/spoiler (whatever you want to call it) Gary Wojnowski, who has proven to be as tough as they come, making it to the finals every time he came to play with the RRA. He was paired up to face Tim Toothman. Tim broke out giving the round and event to Wojnowski and officially becoming my favorite loser :) Inside joke, that I couldn't resist throwing in here but shows what a good guy Tim is...Thank Goodness for me and my poor timing!!!! Hope to see him and Gary back out in 2014 but hopefully running points!!!!
Congrats to your 2013 Champ Mike Walker and
Thank You to all the guys and the lone girl that raced 10.50 during the 2013 Season!!!!

ABRUZZI SMACKDOWN RECAP COMING SOON!!!
MICKEY THOMPSON OUTLAW LIMITED STREET - SPECIAL EVENT
SEE ROSSLER NATIONALS HIGHLIGHT PAGE - COMING SOON!!!
RENEGADE 11.50
Test Race #2 didn't draw quite as many cars as the 1st race but still enough for the guys coming out to have a good time, and race for a little cash. A few of the 10.50 boys who were sticking around till Sunday also had a little fun trying to slow it down a bit and welcome these new guys into the fold.
Tim Chumley of CHUMLEY MOTORSPORTS kicked in $50 bonus for the #1 Qualifier and an additional $50 Bounty on the #1 as well. Brian Fleischman locked up #1 with a very solid pass putting up an 11.5090. Looks like he should be good to go in 2014!!! "Mississippi Mike" Carroll figured out how to slow the car down by using the "1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi...." method, and it seemed to work as he made it to the finals, but your winner for the night was Brian Fleischman, who also got to keep the bounty for himself.
